The last types of text ads are those that run vertically. These come in three sizes: skyscraper (120 x 600), wide skyscraper (160 x 600) and vertical banner (120 x 240).
Clearly, these are valuable options for filling up the sides of the page.
I would also recommend applying the ‘wide skyscraper’, text-only ads on the right-handed edge of the screen — in alignment with the 3-Way Matching I discuss later in the next post.
If you think about it, nearly altogether PC users is right handed (regular left-handed people like me control their mouse with their right hand because it’s how we were ‘brought up’ to use a mouse.) By placing the ads on the right-handed edge it is psychologically ‘less distance’ between your right-handed and the screen.
This ‘closeness’ in my opinion makes the user experience easier and therefore more expected to click through to a link. They feel more in control of their visit experience.
Altogether, you are able to often dissever sites into those that have enough of content at the sides (particularly on some blogs), and those that have nothing on the sides .
I think placing vertical ads in space so that they form the border of the primary text makes the page appear a lot cleaner. But that does not necessarily mean that they are going to get a lot of clicks. If you are putting a vertical banner in an area where you’ve other content then just be sure, as always, that you merge them in well so that they look like the rest of your content.
